Imagine a Cheech and Chong pothead comedy, only instead of two scruffy lowlifes, the movie is about an aimless Scottish gardener and a middle-aged British widow with a green thumb. Grace (Brenda Blethyn of Secrets and Lies and Little Voice) has just discovered that her recently deceased husband has left her with an enormous debt when her gardener Matthew (Craig Ferguson, The Big Tease) asks her to help him tend to his small, personal-use marijuana crop. Grace soon realizes that they can turn her green house into a hydroponics laboratory and turn out a profitable crop–if only they can keep the local constables at bay and then find a dealer to actually sell the stuff. Saving Grace has well-developed characters, intelligent dialogue, a charming and capable cast, and clean, clear direction. But at heart it’s still a marijuana comedy, with most of its funniest moments coming from the silly, stoned behavior of elderly ladies and other stuffy Brits. Nothing wrong with that, and Blethyn and Ferguson give the film a strong anchor. The ending goes a little over-the-top, but most of the movie is well-grounded in genuine human behavior. A subplot about Matthew’s girlfriend’s pregnancy is treated with respect and integrity. Sweet, silly, and sincere. –Bret Fetzer

Summary of Movie
Although it helped to create an audience for Japanese animation in the United States, Robotech (1985) has always been an anomaly: an anime series that was never seen in Japan in its final form. Producers at Harmony Gold edited together footage from Super Dimension Fortress: Macross, Genesis Climber Mospeada, and Super-dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross, three similar-looking series from Tatsunoko Studios, to create an 85-episode sci-fi epic with a new story line. Toys, role-playing games, and novelizations have kept Robotech alive in the hearts of its fans, although it went off the air in the early ’90s. As the adventure continues, the crew of the SDF-1 space fortress tries out a new defense system, overtaxes it, and devastates 25 square miles of the Earth. Not surprisingly, the government orders the ship back into space; the Zentraedi believe they are facing a terrible new weapon and launch a series of assaults. Enchanted with the freer way of life they’ve found aboard the SDF, three Zentraedi spies defect. When Lisa discovers their two races are almost identical biochemically, she takes the information to Earth to try to persuade the government to open peace negotiations. While human-Zentraedi relations improve, interpersonal relations among humans grow increasingly complicated: the bond between Lisa and Rick intensifies, Minmei becomes more involved with Kyle, and Max is smitten with Miriya, another Zentraedi spy. The prints of several of these episodes have faded badly–some lines appear and disappear and the characters’ faces have a weird, splotchy look. Unrated; “contains mild animated violence” restricted to spaceship and robot battles; suitable for ages 8 and up. –Charles Solomon

In 1998, a team led by a French archaeologist went to upper Siberia, following the tip that there may have been a woolly mammoth encased in the permafrost. The team was forced to rely on local nomads for help in locating the beast; the natives were the first to locate the mammoth’s huge tusks. Fighting the unforgiving climate, the team only had a small window of time in which to work before the Siberian winter would stop them; indeed, they had to return the following year to unearth the gigantic prehistoric animal. Eventually they wound up airlifting out, with an enormous Soviet-era cargo helicopter, a huge block of ice with two tusks sticking out and a mammoth inside. In typically exhaustive Discovery Channel fashion, Raising the Mammoth not only follows the efforts of the determined archaeologists, but discusses the history and evolution of the mammoth, theories about the species’ demise, and the possibilities of using mammoth DNA to produce clones with today’s technology (shades of Jurassic Park). It’s a fascinating look at what had to be an enormous struggle, one that paid off in terms of scientific knowledge and archaeological significance. –Jerry Renshaw

Rich with ambiguity, this smooth adaptation of Scott Turow’s bestselling mystery novel stars Harrison Ford as Rusty Sabich, the prosecuting attorney assigned to a case involving the murder of a beautiful, seductive lawyer (Greta Scacchi) with whom he’d been having a secret affair. After the investigation gets off to a slow start, damning evidence points to Rusty as the prime suspect. His career is destroyed when his superior and secondary suspect Raymond Horgan (Brian Dennehy) sets him up for the fall. Bonnie Bedelia plays Rusty’s wife Barbara, who is not above suspicion herself. While Ford’s performance rides a fine line between presumed innocence and possible guilt, director Alan J. Pakula (All the President’s Men) maintains a consistent tone of uncertainty that keeps the viewer guessing. –Jeff Shannon

This Frank Capra comedy from 1931 helped define the screwball-comedy genre that became so popular with films like It Happened One Night and The Awful Truth. In this witty romp, Jean Harlow plays an upper-crust socialite who bullies her reporter husband (Robert Williams) into conforming to her highfalutin ways. The husband chafes at the confinement of high society, though, and yearns for a creative outlet. He decides to write a play and collaborates with a fellow reporter (Loretta Young); the results are unexpectedly hilarious, especially when Young shows up at the mansion with a gaggle of boozehound reporters in tow. With snappy, ribald dialogue (allowable in those pre-Hays Code days), Capra keeps the gags flying fast and furious, taking special delight in having Williams’s journalist pals rib him endlessly over his kept-man status. Platinum Blonde was a great success at the time of its release during the class-conscious Depression; for better or worse, its star Harlow was identified with the tag “platinum blonde” until her untimely death. –Jerry Renshaw

My Best Friend’s Wedding
One of the best romantic comedies of the 1990s, My Best Friend’s Wedding not only gave Julia Roberts a delightful vehicle for her crowd-pleasing comeback, but it further distinguished itself by avoiding the conventional plotting of the genre. Julia plays a prominent Chicago restaurant critic whose best friend (Dermot Mulroney) is a former lover from her college days with whom she’d made a binding pact: if neither of them were married by the age of 28, they’d marry each other. Just when they’re about to reach the deadline of their agreement, Mulroney arrives in Chicago to introduce Roberts to his seemingly perfect fiancée (Cameron Diaz) and announce their wedding in just three days. That leaves the shocked Julia with just three short days to sabotage the wedding and marry the man she now realizes she’s loved all along. With potential heartbreak waiting in the wings, she’ll either get what she wants or pay the price for her selfish behavior, and Ronald Bass’s cleverly constructed screenplay keeps us guessing to the very end. Rupert Everett scored rave reviews for his scene-stealing performance as Robert’s gay friend who goes along with her scheming (but only so far), and even as she makes her character’s needy desperation disarmingly appealing, Roberts wisely allows Diaz to capitalize on her charming time in the spotlight. As the romantic outcome remains uncertain, the viewer is held in a state of giddy suspense, and director P.J. Hogan pulls off some hilarious scenes (like a restaurant full of people singing the Dionne Warwick hit “I Say a Little Prayer”) that could easily have fallen flat in the hands of a less talented filmmaker. It’s no surprise that this was one of the box-office smashes of 1997. –Jeff Shannon
Steel Magnolias
Based on Robert Harling’s play, this comedy-drama directed by Herbert Ross (The Turning Point) follows several years in the lives of women who regularly see one another at a beauty shop in their small Louisiana town. The story deepens as Julia Roberts, playing a serious diabetic and the daughter of Sally Field, goes downhill in her health. But as an ensemble piece, this is one of those enjoyably lumpy tearjerkers with many years’ worth of stored truths suddenly being shared between the characters, lots of grievances aired, that sort of thing. Daryl Hannah and Shirley MacLaine assume the most eccentric roles, Dolly Parton the most fun, and Olympia Dukakis the most dignified, while Sally Field essentially provides the moral and emotional center of the movie. –Tom Keogh
