Cult comic actor Steve Carell–long adored for his supporting work on The Daily Show and in movies like Bruce Almighty and Anchorman–leaps into leading man status with The 40 Year-Old Virgin. There’s no point describing the plot; it’s about how a 40 year-old virgin named Andy (Carell) finally finds true love and gets laid. Along the way, there are very funny scenes involving being coached by his friends, speed dating, being propositioned by his female manager, and getting his chest waxed. Carell finds both humor and humanity in Andy, and the supporting cast includes some standout comic work from Paul Rudd (Clueless, The Shape of Things) and Jane Lynch (Best in Show, A Mighty Wind), as well as an unusually straight performance from Catherine Keener (Lovely & Amazing, Being John Malkovich). And yet… something about the movie misses the mark. It skirts around the topic of male sexual anxiety, mining it for easy jokes, but never really digs into anything that would make the men in the audience actually squirm–and it’s a lot less funny as a result. Nonetheless, there are many great bits, and Carell deserves the chance to shine. –Bret Fetzer

This enjoyable thriller, written and directed by Phil Alden Robinson (the screenwriter of Field of Dreams), follows a raggedy group of corporate security experts who get in over their heads when they accept an assignment poaching some hot hardware for the National Security Agency. Robert Redford plays the group’s guru, an aging techno-anarchist who has been hiding from the feds since the early 1970s; his companionable gang of freaks includes Dan Aykroyd, David Strathairn, Mary McDonnell, the late River Phoenix, and Sidney Poitier, as a veteran CIA operative turned “sneaker.” The technological black box that everybody is after, an array of computer chips that can decode any encrypted message, isn’t a very plausible invention, but it’s a serviceable McGuffin, and the megalomania of the master plotter played by Ben Kingsley has more resonance than most. Modest inferences can be drawn about the very latest high-tech threats to civil liberties. –David Chute

Somewhere into the so-so “Itsy Bitsy Spider” segment, the sinking feeling that Kids’ Favorite Songs 2 is strictly sequel material sets in. This is a march down Sesame Street on a slow day, when the loopy monster misunderstandings and goofball gags miss a rare beat or two. Still, making merry is what the Sesame crew does best, and they succeed here, if on a less brilliant level than we’ve come to expect. All the usual favorites, like “If You’re Happy and You Know It” and “The Ants Go Marching,” get the gang and their real-life kid friends grooving, and a running joke involving a renegade meatball keeps kids 18 months to 5 tuned in to the end. A giddy attempt to combine a standard film noir plot and a contemporary sex farce about men who (to quote John Hiatt’s song) let their little heads do the thinking, One Night at McCool’s is a promising comedy that never hits full speed, coasting along amiably enough before spiraling into violence that clashes with its trashy sensibility. It’s not as polished as Grosse Pointe Blank, but it’s fun enough to recommend, especially for those who drool at the sight of Liv Tyler. The movie begins by suggesting that Liv is sexy, then proceeds to prove it, and then continually insists upon it until you’re left with no choice but to wholeheartedly agree. It’s an easy choice, but pity the movie’s wretched guys for making it.

As bombshell Jewell Valentine, Tyler lures three guys into her criminal scheme of happy homemaking. Bartender Matt Dillon’s the first to take the bait; as Dillon’s lawyer cousin, Paul Reiser can’t resist; and when murder complicates everything, detective John Goodman employs his own love-struck brand of chivalry. Sporting a tacky pompadour, Michael Douglas steals the show as a hit man hired to whack the scheming sexpot–and Andrew Dice Clay is surprisingly funny in a dangerous dual role–but of course Liv can hold her own. It’s all quite amusing, but rarely is McCool’s as funny as you hope it will be; the dialogue by Stan Seidel (who sadly died before filming completed) is zesty enough but lacks the Coenesque punch that would kick it over the top. It hardly matters, though; with a femme fatale like Liv in control, the movie’s faults will be easily forgiven. –Jeff Shannon

The film does an excellent job of conveying both Ali’s genuine importance as a historical figure and his incredible personal magnetism. Though the documentary doesn’t shy away from his faults, Ali is simply impossible to dislike. Most importantly, the film’s commentary and carefully selected fight footage make it clear even to those who don’t follow the sport what a remarkable boxer Ali was. At one point, Lennox Lewis refers to the “sweet science” of not getting hit, and watching Ali dodge a barrage of punches, we understand exactly what he means. Muhammad Ali: Through the Eyes of the World doesn’t pack quite the dramatic wallop of When We Were Kings, but it is a compelling look at one of history’s greatest athletes. –Ali Davis

Sophisticated to a point, this well-executed wolf-man tale works due to its clever setting and enormous star power. We all know Jack Nicholson can go nuts, but the script makes his character aware of his changes, sometimes for the better, early on. The setting, a publishing house in the middle of a takeover, gives the characters dramatic life before the horror elements kicks in. A senior editor about to get the boot, Nicholson’s character becomes a new man after being bitten by a wolf. He takes on challenges at work, lives a more robust life, and attracts a new love. But will his newfound energy consume him? Director Mike Nichols keeps the action alive in the first half, but the film peters out at the end with cheap theatrics and the overuse of slow motion. Michelle Pfeiffer has little to do as simply the love interest with a grittier than average personality. Better is James Spader as a smarmy colleague. Nicholson is in fine form, relying on his keen gift to spark interest (a twitch of the head, a look in the eyes), instead of heavy doses of movie makeup. Giuseppe Rotunno’s sweeping camerawork sets the mood quite well. Easy to recommend, with the added feature it’s hardly gratuitous. –Doug Thomas
